The East Carson River The East Carson River is rated a blue
ribbon trout stream. It flows just outside of Markleville in Alpine county Ca, and
descends to the Carson valley (Nevada) where it is used for irrigation and recreation.
While still in California the river offers spectacular fishing untill it reaches
the Nevada border where leviathin mine leaches harmful chemicals into the river.
Fishing below the Nevada border is not recommended.
Rainbows, Browns and Cutthroat call this river home and are stunningly beautiful as the picture to the right shows. The average size fish is between twelve and fourteen inches. Larger fish (18"or greater) live amongst the deeper holes and can be caught by the experienced angler on occasion. These larger fish are not easy to catch, and especially in the mid summer when the water is crystal clear, during the spring larger fish can be caught more frequently when the river isnt a chocolate milk color caused by spring run off. Another nice feature about the spring is that fishing pressure is at its minnimum.During the summer the fishing can be very good but the water temperatures get very high and the fish can become very lethargic. On occasion a cooling trend will spark fish into feeding actively. The larger trout will rise to Golden Stones and Hopper's on the surface. Refer to the hatch chart for more info. The fall fishing on this river is excellent. The air temperature drops enough in the evenings to produce great caddis and mayfly hatches and if no major storms deliver an early snow, Golden Stones and Hopper's can be present. The October Caddis hatches on this river can be well worth while, and primarily come off in the evening. An Orange Wing Thing or Parachute Madam-x (6-10) usually does the trick for these large caddis. If you would like to check current stream flows or book a guided trip click below or call (530) 694-2727Please practice Catch and Release techniques on the East Carson River. |
